PA6 (Nylon 6) 30 questions

PA6 supplier selection: frequently asked questions

PA6 covers a very wide range of uses, so check first that a supplier matches your application, then assess their capability. This page covers how to pick a manufacturer, how to spot regrind, how sampling and supplier switching work, and how to negotiate a framework agreement — with equivalent-grade sampling as the constant theme.

01How to choose a PA6 supplier

Five points: the base chip source, compounding capability, testing facilities, batch consistency and technical responsiveness. PA6 spans a wide range of uses (fibre, monofilament, injection moulding, compounding), so state your application clearly first and ask for an equivalent grade sample rather than comparing price alone.

02Which PA6 manufacturer is best

Find the one that matches your application: for reinforced and toughened compounds, look at the twin-screw lines and the lab; for moulded parts, look at tooling and equipment. For a buyer, the most effective approach is a side-by-side sample trial under the same conditions — properties, appearance and stability. We (Yuyao Best Plastics Industry Co., Ltd.) focus on reinforced and toughened PA6 and can propose an equivalent grade for your conditions.

03Recommended PA6 manufacturers

Do not rely on other people's rankings. Verify in two rounds: first, compare samples from two or three suppliers on properties and appearance; second, audit the ones that pass and check batch records and retention samples. After that you will rarely choose wrong.

04Where are PA6 compounders concentrated

Modified PA6 capacity is concentrated around Yuyao in Ningbo (China Plastics City (Yuyao)), Suzhou, Wuxi and Dongguan. Yuyao's advantage is having the raw material hub on the doorstep: a short sourcing radius and fast transfers, and the Yangtze River Delta compounders have the fullest support for PA6/PA66 engineering materials.

05Should PA6 and PA66 come from the same supplier

Most compounders run both PA6 and PA66 — the lines are shared and only the formulation systems differ — so a single supplier saves you communication and audit effort. But confirm they actually ship the specific grade family you need (PA6 toughened, PA66 flame retardant), rather than doing a bit of everything without depth.

06PA6 supplier vs trader: how to tell them apart

Ask three questions: can you adjust the formulation to my performance thresholds, can you provide signed samples and a COA per batch, can you host a factory audit. Yes to all three means a manufacturer; quoting prices for off-the-shelf grades only means a trader. Traders are not unusable — they help with small, mixed orders — but know what you are buying.

07What to look at in a PA6 factory audit

Four must-sees: the scale of the twin-screw extrusion lines, the lab (melt flow, mechanical, DSC), segregated raw material storage (virgin and regrind), and a batch retention sample system. Regrind problems are more common in PA6 than in PA66, so scrutinise warehouse control especially closely.

08PA6 supplier document checklist

Six standard items: business licence, quality system certificate, third-party test reports, RoHS/REACH compliance (for exported parts), a COA for every batch, and comparative sample test reports. Add the relevant compliance documents for food-contact or electrical and electronic applications.

09How does the PA6 sampling process work

Provide the application and conditions, performance thresholds, current grade, colour and monthly volume → the compounder proposes an equivalent grade → samples are sent → trial moulding → signed and retained sample → small batch → volume. Keep a reference sample at every step; acceptance is against the signed sample.

10How long does PA6 sampling take

Stock grades ship in 1-3 days; custom colour matching and special modification take 5-10 working days. Yuyao Best Plastics Industry Co., Ltd. keeps mainstream reinforced and toughened PA6 grades in stock and proposes an equivalent grade before sending samples.

11What is the PA6 minimum order quantity

Standard grades from 25kg bags; custom formulations usually from 500kg, driven by changeover cost. For trial and small-batch orders you can negotiate stock grades — many compounders run a dedicated small-batch segment for smaller customers.

12How does custom colour matching work for PA6

Provide a Pantone reference or a physical colour chip, the base grade, and the service environment (indoor or outdoor, flame-retardant requirement or not); the compounder makes a colour plaque for approval, then matches on the line. Colours in FR or high glass-load systems need the properties re-validated — do not judge a colour change on shade alone.

13Why do PA6 quotes differ so much

Two grades both called PA6 GF30 can differ in price because of the regrind ratio, the glass grade and the additive system. Compare on the same datasheet and the same test method, then weigh actual sample performance — cheap samples usually give themselves away on impact and appearance.

14How to tell regrind from virgin PA6

Three checks: price (be wary if clearly below chip market levels), properties (impact and elongation drop noticeably with regrind), and the supplier (will they commit to virgin material in writing). The most reliable step is to have the base resin ratio written into the contract.

15How to guarantee PA6 batch consistency

A COA for every batch, a retention sample system and a stated inter-batch property variation range are the three hard requirements. Ask for three consecutive batches and compare them side by side, focusing on melt flow and impact variation — large swings become an unstable reject rate at the moulding machine.

16How to choose a PA6 toughening specialist

For toughened PA6/PA66, look at low-temperature impact data and actual test performance: impact retention after -30°C freeze-thaw cycles says more about the toughening system than room-temperature figures. Choose a supplier with low-temperature test capability and real part or vehicle cases.

17How to choose a glass-reinforced PA6 supplier

Look at glass dispersion, fibre-show control and glass content accuracy. Mould samples on the same tool and check appearance, verify glass content by burn-off or ash content, and compare the scatter of the mechanical data. For parts with high cosmetic requirements, ask the supplier for advice on reducing fibre show.

18What after-sales support should a PA6 supplier give

A supplier who will come to the moulding floor and solve problems is worth the premium: drying parameters, mould temperature, and root-cause analysis of fibre show, burning and sink marks. Ask directly when selecting: what is your response process when a defect appears, and do you have technical service engineers who follow the line.

19How to switch PA6 supplier without disruption

Signed sample comparison → small batch run in parallel → staged replacement, with retained samples at each step. Note that PA6 is sensitive to drying and processing: watch the parameters on the first day of running new material, and adjust the process before concluding the material is at fault.

20How to replace an imported PA6 grade

Take the original datasheet and find an equivalent, aligning on equivalent properties and equivalent approvals. PA6 substitution is relatively mature — focus on impact, melt flow and appearance. Send samples, then a small batch, and only switch main supply once the substitution is proven.

21What is the PA6 lead time

Stock grades 1-3 days, custom 7-15 days. Local Yuyao suppliers generally reach Yangtze River Delta customers next day; in peak season order a week ahead and keep a rolling forecast.

22How to secure PA6 supply stability

Look at the base resin sourcing channel, the safety stock policy and line backup. PA6 raw material prices are volatile, so for long-term cooperation sign a framework agreement to lock volume, with prices following the market and reviewed periodically — far more resilient than one-off purchasing.

23Where to buy small quantities of PA6

The stock-grade segment at a compounder or a distribution hub such as China Plastics City (Yuyao) both support small quantities. Validate process and properties at small volume first, then discuss custom grades and pricing — squeezing price before validating is how people fall into the regrind trap.

24What information does a PA6 quote need

Application and conditions, performance thresholds, current grade or datasheet, colour, and monthly volume — all five. Quotes based on incomplete information are not comparable, and sampling will waste one or two weeks going back and forth.

25PA6 packaging and logistics

Standard 25kg woven bags on pallets, next-day delivery within the Yangtze River Delta, with packaging and labelling changed to order. For long-distance transport in humid summer conditions, confirm a moisture-barrier liner — PA6 that has absorbed moisture causes problems as soon as it reaches the machine.

26How to sign a PA6 supply contract

Write into the technical agreement: the signed sample number, key targets and permitted batch deviation, the test method, and return or replacement responsibility. PA6 prices move quickly, so add a price adjustment mechanism to the price clause to avoid disputes in a rising or falling market.

27How to negotiate a PA6 framework agreement

Four core elements: the committed volume band, a monthly rolling forecast, safety stock and a quarterly price review. The supplier gets a forecast in exchange for holding stock; you get price and priority scheduling in exchange for committed volume. Only a win-win structure survives long term.

28PA6: wholesale or direct from the manufacturer

Buy main grades direct in volume; use wholesalers or stock segments for small top-ups. The test: once a grade exceeds about half a tonne a month, the price and consistency gains from direct supply justify the time spent on a factory audit.

29Is e-commerce sampling reliable for PA6

E-commerce is fine for finding samples and comparing prices, but do not rely on it for volume: batch consistency, COAs and technical support are all missing. Use it to shortlist grades, then go direct to the manufacturer for formal sampling and signed-sample approval.

30How to assess a PA6 supplier's formulation capability

Three signals: whether they proactively propose a formulation direction for your conditions (rather than only quoting existing grades), whether they have delivered cases in a similar application, and their first-sample pass rate. A strong formulator usually gets close to the requirement on the first sample.
